Always Speaking

I love that we get to commune with the Lord on a daily basis. At work, at home, with friends, whatever I’m doing the Lord is speaking to me. Actually He is speaking to all of us. Isn’t that good news? The maker of the universe is always finding ways to connect with you and me. This fills my heart with so much joy. Our God is a God of connection. He draws us all to Himself and, inevitably so, to each other.
I see God and us in a large crowd. The Father stands like a giant before the crowd, with so much love and pride in His eyes that He could just burst. His son, Jesus, walks in the crowd, going to every person and embracing them. Finally, the Holy Spirit dances in the air like beams of colourful light before shooting into every heart and we are filled with the glory of God. We are then fully connected to God in us, and we His kids are unified in spirit. I believe this is happening in the heavenlies, but how do we engage that in our day to day? The answer is we must learn to hear and know God’s voice.
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul speaks on the gifts of the Spirit, one of them being prophecy, or hearing the voice of the Lord. Hearing God’s voice is for everyone. Paul describes prophecy as being for the church (1 Corinthians 14) as a way to strengthen, encourage and comfort. How are we to distribute the word of God if we ourselves are not in conversation with the Lord? When we feel the Lord speak to us in our spirits it takes His wisdom in us to determine what to do next. It can either be something that is just for you, or it could be for someone else. God will release you to deliver His word to others so that they can share in what you’ve learned..
God communicates to us in different ways, it can be a still small voice, something in nature, art, journaling… I knew someone who God spoke to with complex math problems! God can use anything in life to minister to our hearts.
Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t learned His voice yet, it doesn’t stop Him from reaching out and loving you. If you are trying to hear Him, my first suggestion is to read His word. The Bible is the living word of God. You want to know what He thinks or how He loves? Start there. Though the world has changed since the Bible was written, His character and His love have not. The Bible is still as relevant today as it was back then.
The other suggestion is listen to the people who have prophesied over you. They were speaking on behalf of the Lord. What they shared was something God wanted you to know. This form of communication goes back to God’s desire for us to have relationships. Their obedience opened doors for the two of you to be vulnerable with each other. You trusted them with the deeper things in your heart, and they invited you into a conversation between themselves and God. When these moments come, it’s an opportunity to walk together and build meaningful relationships.
The last thing I have to leave you with is pay attention. God may be revealing things to you but you don’t notice because life gets busy and your attention is elsewhere. You can turn your attention however. I like to worship during whatever it is that I’m doing, my heart is then positioned to perceive what He may be doing. It takes practice and that’s ok. Listen faithfully and you will hear his voice. Listen not only with devotion, but with confidence that you will hear Him.
Jesus is reaching out to embrace you. He is smiling and excited because He knows you have been seeking this relationship with Him. Jesus is there, quietly but excitedly waiting for you to see His eyes for the first time, to recognize His voice for the first time. Reposition your heart, turn around.
